About the Item

Arthur Joseph Meadows (1843–1907) "Littlehampton" Oil on canvas. England, circa 1870–1880. A beautifully executed coastal landscape by the celebrated British marine painter Arthur Joseph Meadows, depicting the shoreline at Littlehampton, West Sussex. Bathed in soft coastal light beneath an expansive sky, the composition captures local fishing vessels beached at low tide, fishermen and families along the shore, and the distinctive atmosphere for which Meadows became renowned. The warm ochre sands contrast elegantly with the cool blues of the sea and sky, while the finely observed figures and shipping lend the scene both life and narrative. Arthur Joseph Meadows was one of the finest Victorian painters of marine and coastal subjects. Influenced by the great Clarkson Stanfield, he specialised in the fishing communities and harbours of England, France and the Netherlands, developing a style distinguished by luminous skies, subtle atmospheric effects and carefully rendered maritime detail. His works were exhibited at the Royal Academy and the British Institution during the mid-19th century and today are represented in important public collections, including the National Maritime Museum. This painting is particularly desirable as it depicts the Sussex coast at Littlehampton, an increasingly sought-after subject among collectors of British coastal paintings. The generous 16 x 22 inch canvas allows Meadows to fully demonstrate his ability to combine sweeping skies with intimate scenes of everyday Victorian seaside life. The fishing smacks with their russet sails, figures tending the day's catch, bathers in the shallows and the solitary sheepdog create a wonderfully balanced composition rich in charm and period character. The painting retains its original canvas and is presented in an impressive Victorian gilt exhibition frame of exceptional quality. The reverse bears the label of the respected Omell Galleries of St James's, London, specialists in 19th- and early 20th-century paintings. An excellent example of Arthur Joseph Meadows' mature work, combining an attractive and highly recognisable English coastal subject with outstanding colour, atmosphere and painterly quality. This superb work of art combines the beauty of a painting with the mechanical complicities of an automaton and clock. Depicting a rural scene, the clock is integrated into the church, sitting within the giltwood and gesso frame. Also within the painting is automaton windmill, again integrated into the picture atop the windmill. The automaton runs off the clock, so requires no separate winding, The clock is a fine 8 day, fusee movement with gut string, with verge escapement...
