About the Item

Javier Ciria (1904–1991) Caballos Oil on panel. Surrealist composition depicting colorful intertwined horses. Signed and dated lower left. and Back with title in Barcelona. Circa May 26 1954 Framed dimensions: H. 37 × W. 24 × D. 3 cm Unframed dimensions: approx. 20 × 17 cm This painting, created in 1954, illustrates the singular universe of Javier Ciria, characterized by a poetic and organic surrealism. The horses — powerful and symbolic figures — intertwine within a dynamic composition dominated by vivid colors and fluid forms. The work evokes both dream and movement, in an atmosphere close to fantasy and the automatism of postwar Spanish surrealism. The wooden support enhances the density of the pictorial material and lends the work an intimate and precious quality. The colorful palette and the distortion of the bodies reflect the artist’s interest in imaginary worlds, instinct, and biological forms. Artist Biography Javier Ciria was a Spanish painter born in Zaragoza in 1904 and deceased in Barcelona in 1991. Trained at the School of Arts and Crafts in Zaragoza, he traveled extensively throughout Europe and Latin America from a young age, experiences that deeply nourished his artistic imagination. Beginning in the 1930s, he developed a body of work linked to Spanish surrealism while gradually incorporating abstract and organic elements. Ciria is regarded as one of the historic representatives of Aragonese surrealism. His work is characterized by dreamlike landscapes, hybrid figures, biological and marine themes, and a constant fascination with natural forms — particularly seashells, of which he was an avid collector. Exhibitions and Recognition The artist exhibited from the 1930s onward, notably with a well-received first exhibition in San Sebastián in 1931. After settling in Barcelona in 1950, his work evolved toward a so-called “biological” period, becoming more colorful and symbolic. Several retrospective exhibitions were dedicated to him after his death, including a major anthological exhibition organized at the Palace of Sástago in Zaragoza in 1994. Importance of the 1950s Period The year 1954 corresponds to an important phase in Javier Ciria’s career. Having recently settled in Barcelona, he developed a freer and more mature style of painting, combining surrealism, abstraction, and organic symbolism. This period also marked the renewal of Spanish surrealism after the Second World War, when several artists sought to move beyond the classical codes of the movement in order to explore more personal and experimental worlds. The horses depicted in this work may be interpreted as symbols of vitality, freedom, and instinctive energy — recurring themes in postwar surrealist art.

------------ Eugène Berman - "Paludia" (1967-1968) Type: Oil on canvas Signature: Monogrammed at the bottom center, countersigned on the back Creation Date: 1967-Rome-1968 Dimensions: 67 cm x 54 cm Frame: Rare Troubadour-style papier-mâché frame, circa 1840 Exhibitions and Provenance: Exhibition label from Galerie Lucie Weill on the back Annotations from Forni Gallery in Bologna Bibliography: Galerie Lucie Weill, The Neo-Romantics: Christian Bérard, Léonid and Eugène Berman, Pavel Tchelitchew, Paris, 1971. "Paludia" is an oil on canvas created by Eugène Berman between 1967 and 1968 in Rome. Representative of his neo-romantic style, the piece exudes melancholy and poetic introspection, with a dreamlike quality reflecting his theatrical approach to composition. The rare papier-mâché Troubadour frame, dating from circa 1840, enhances the historical aura of the work, aligning with the artist’s deep appreciation for curiosities and antiquities. Biography of Eugène Berman (1899-1972): Born on November 4, 1899, in Saint Petersburg, Eugène Berman was a Russian-born American painter and theater designer. He was the brother of Léonide Berman. He received his early artistic education in Western Europe, training in Germany, Switzerland, and France, with studies under Pavel Naumov and Sergey Gruzenberg between 1914 and 1918. Leaving Russia in 1918, he studied at Académie Ranson in Paris, under the guidance of Maurice Denis and Édouard Vuillard. Influenced by Giorgio de Chirico and Picasso, he exhibited his works (portraits and landscapes) at the Salons d’Automne and des Tuileries between 1923 and 1927. Alongside his brother, he championed a poetic and symbolic form of painting. In 1935, he emigrated to the United States, working as a theater designer while continuing to produce allegorical works. He became an American citizen in 1937. He passed away on December 14, 1972, in Rome or New York. Cabinet of Curiosities and Personal Collection: Eugène Berman owned a significant collection of antique artifacts, including: Ceramics, statuettes, sculptures, glassware, textiles, and rugs from Pre-Columbian, African, New Guinea, British Columbia, Egyptian, Coptic, Greek, Etruscan, and Roman civilizations.
