Pair of Original Architectural Presentation Watercolours Somerset at Moorings, Riviera Drive, Naples, Florida Wallace McTammany (1921–2015) for Steven J. Brisson, AIA A rare and highly atmospheric pair of original 1970s architectural presentation watercolours depicting the luxury waterfront development Somerset at Moorings, located along Riviera Drive in Naples, Florida. Executed by noted architectural illustrator Wallace McTammany for architect Steven J. Brisson, AIA, the works capture a pivotal moment in the emergence of Naples as one of America’s premier luxury coastal destinations during the post-war Florida development boom. Before the arrival of digital rendering and CGI visualisation, architectural delineators such as McTammany occupied a unique position between artist and architect. Every reflection, shadow, tropical planting arrangement, atmospheric effect, and perspective line was meticulously calculated and painted entirely by hand in order to transform an architect’s proposal into an aspirational vision of luxury living. The first rendering presents the project’s dramatic waterfront perspective — effectively the visual “money shot” intended for prospective buyers and developers. Painted from a low vantage point across the marina, the composition immerses the viewer within an idealised vision of Southwest Florida coastal life: private docks, calm waterways, manicured tropical landscaping, and Mediterranean-inspired condominium architecture glowing beneath expansive Florida skies. The second rendering functions as a broader site and amenity overview, illustrating the architectural relationship between the residential buildings, circulation routes, shoreline, landscaped grounds, and communal leisure spaces. Despite its practical planning purpose, the work retains a distinctly painterly atmosphere characteristic of high-end architectural presentation art of the period. Today, original hand-rendered architectural watercolours from Florida’s post-war expansion era are increasingly appreciated not only as decorative works, but as historically important visual records documenting the evolution of modern coastal American architecture and resort living.
