About the Item

A handsome and most striking Dutch late 17th/early 18th century Oil on Canvas and Giltwood Vanitas painting, in the manner of Pieter Claesz. This exceptional Old Master still life painting is set within a wonderful foliate designed Giltwood frame with satin and burnished reserves on all sides before the Rais de Coeur edge. At the center is an intricately detailed crown with ermine trim aside a scepter, skull and letter displaying a wax seal. These objects symbolizing the passage of time and the transient nature of human existence. Vanitas paintings were a style of still life art meant to remind is viewers of the short duration of life, the certainty of death, and the futility of personal possessions. Pieter Claesz (1597–1660) was a Dutch Golden Age painter renowned for his still life compositions, particularly his tonal banquet pieces that captured the quiet elegance of everyday objects. Born in Burgsteinfurt, Germany, he later settled in Haarlem, where he became a leading figure in the development of "ontbijtjes" (breakfast still lifes). Claesz was a master of subtle light, muted palettes, and reflective surfaces, creating works that explored transience, modesty, and material beauty.
