About the Item

Oil on canvas, signed lower right. Dimensions listed include the frame. Featuring the Privateer ship "America" under full sail. Title and dated on the reverse. The dimensions listed include the frame. Brereton was born in Derby in 1954. He received his basic art training at the Derby Joseph Wright Art School although he is a self-taught artist. He works mainly in oils and specializes in marine subjects, his favourite subjects being deep water sailing ships of the 19th century. His work has been influenced by artists such as Montague Dawson and Thomas Somerscales. His love of ships and the sea emanate from having lived by the sea on the south coast of England. His work is recorded and illustrated in Denys Brook-hart’s book “20th Century British Marine Paining”, and E.H.H. Archibald’s “Dictionary of Sea Painters of Europe and America”. He has exhibited at the Royal Society of marine artists in London and West End, as well as many galleries throughout the UK

Thomas Luny (1759–1837), born in Cornwall, probably at St Ewe, was an English artist and painter, mostly of seascapes and other marine-based works. At the age of eleven, Luny left Cornwall to live in London. There he became the apprentice of Francis Holman, a marine painter who would have a great and long lasting artistic influence on Luny: Luny remained until 1780 in Holman's London studio, which, was first situated in Broad Street, St. George's, and later relocated to Old Gravel Lane.
