About the Item

A striking 18th-century English heraldic funerary hatchment, painted in oil on canvas and presented within its substantial original-style ebonised and gilt lozenge-shaped frame. Richly coloured and finely executed, it is an impressive survivor from the Georgian period, combining heraldic tradition with the symbolism of mortality and remembrance. The composition centres on a finely painted armorial achievement enclosed within elaborate scrolling mantling. Above the shield rises a knight's helmet surmounted by a crowned lion crest, while below a ribbon bearing the Latin motto "Resurgam" ("I shall rise again") is accompanied by a painted skull, a powerful memento mori symbol reminding the viewer of mortality and the hope of resurrection. Funerary hatchments were commissioned to commemorate the death of members of the armigerous gentry and nobility. Traditionally displayed outside the deceased's residence during the mourning period, they were later transferred to the family chapel or parish church, where many examples remain today. Their distinctive diamond-shaped format derives from the heraldic funeral shields carried in procession before the coffin during the 17th century. By the 18th century, hatchments had evolved into increasingly elaborate works of art, incorporating richly painted mantling, crests, mottos and symbolic imagery associated with death and remembrance. The colour of the background could also indicate whether the deceased's spouse was living or had predeceased them, making each hatchment both a memorial and a heraldic record. The inclusion of the skull places this work firmly within the wider European tradition of Vanitas and Memento Mori imagery. Rather than serving as a morbid device, these symbols reminded viewers of the transience of earthly life, the futility of worldly ambition and the certainty of death, while the motto Resurgam expresses the Christian hope of resurrection. Retaining strong colour, crisp heraldic detail and commanding proportions, this is an exceptionally decorative statement piece, equally suited to a country house, library, or interior centred on heraldry and historic decorative arts.
