About the Item

This antique Russian icon, dating from the late 18th to early 19th century, represents a richly layered devotional composition painted in tempera on wood. The icon is arranged in a four-part narrative structure, each scene carefully framed and unified by a warm gilded background and ornamental borders. The imagery includes powerful depictions of warrior saints on horseback, revered holy figures standing in solemn procession, and biblical scenes conveying protection, intercession, and divine guidance. Particularly striking are the dynamic equestrian figures, rendered with expressive movement and vivid red and earth-toned pigments, contrasting with the calm, hieratic presence of the standing saints below. Fine inscriptions identify the holy figures, while the decorative borders reveal traditional geometric and floral motifs characteristic of late Imperial Russian icon painting. The icon is housed in its original wooden kiot (protective case) with glass, emphasizing both its devotional function and historical authenticity. The reverse shows a darkened, time-softened surface consistent with age and prolonged use. A visually compelling and spiritually resonant work, well suited for collectors of Russian religious art or as a dramatic focal piece in an interior.
