About the Item

A signed 20th-century Post-Impressionist oil painting titled “Les Barges”, depicting barges and small boats along the river channels of Paris. Rendered with energetic, expressive brushwork, the composition presents a lively waterfront scene with figures, moored vessels, reflective water and the Parisian cityscape emerging in the distance. Layers of turquoise, blue, green, ochre and muted rose create a richly atmospheric surface, while the strong contrasts and simplified forms reflect the influence of French Post-Impressionism. The painting is signed “Rubinstein” in the lower-left corner. An inscription on the reverse identifies the artist as a Jewish painter born in Moscow in 1910 and deceased in Paris in 1979, with artistic activity connected to the Beaux-Arts environment of Vilnius and studies at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris. This biographical information is presented according to the inscription and has not been independently verified. Vilnius was an important center of Jewish intellectual and artistic life before the Second World War, while the Académie de la Grande Chaumière attracted many international artists working in Paris during the 20th century. The painting is executed in oil on wood panel and presented in an elaborate carved giltwood-style frame with floral and scrolling ornamentation. The ornate frame creates an elegant contrast with the expressive modern handling of the maritime subject.
