About the Item

Nikolai Dubovik (b1960, Urzaf, Southern Russia) A huge and striking oil on canvas by this graduate of the Surikov Institute and contemporary of Vyacheslav Nikolaivic Zabelin. There has never been a better time to consider Russian art as an investment. Sotheby’s have stated that works by Russian painters represented one of the fastest growing markets they have seen, growing from 26th to 6th position by revenue, and have as a result of this demand, opened a Moscow office. Two years ago, Fortune magazine reported that the number of billionaires in Russia had grown from around 6 or 7 in 2002 to 106 and this ever-growing group of Russia’s elite are having a major effect pushing prices upwards. After decades of availability of Russian works from artists who had left the country, a new opportunity exists to purchase high quality works from artists who never left the Motherland, artists whose works are the most highly regarded and respected, with many in the field acknowledging that the most important Realist paintings from the last century came from Russia. There is still a large gap between the (relatively) higher prices being realized for Western artists and lower prices for those from Russia, and the keen investor and collector will know to exploit that difference before market forces cause the prices to equalize.
