About the Item

Jean Pillement (1728-1808) Untitled, 1781 Pastel on paper A delicate pastoral scene by Jean Pillement, depicting elegantly dressed figures gathered along a wooded path within an atmospheric landscape. Executed in soft pastel tones, the composition reflects Pillement's refined handling of light, texture, and color, as well as his lyrical approach to genre and landscape subjects. The fluid handling of the pastel and subtle chromatic harmonies evoke a sense of movement and intimacy characteristic of late 18th-century French Rococo sensibility. Pillement was celebrated throughout Europe for his imaginative landscapes and ornamental designs, influencing both fine and decorative arts. This work exemplifies his mature style and poetic vision. Jean Pillement worked in Portugal between circa 1780 and 1786, during the reign of Queen Maria I. He was invited to Lisbon as a court artist and decorator, at a moment when Portuguese taste favoured refined French Rococo aesthetics. In Portugal, Pillement produced pastels, drawings, decorative designs, and landscape compositions, influencing both painting and decorative arts. Dimensions: 29.5 x 40.5 cm
