About the Item

"Winter Problems" original oil on canvas by Russ Vickers. Painting portrays three cowboys surrounding young Hereford cow with hurt leg. Scene is snowy and bright, done in Vicker's usual style. In simple wood and canvas frame. Perfect piece for a modern or rustic Western style home. Size: 12" x 16", frame 17" x 21" (1923 - 1997) Russ Vickers was noted as the artist for paintings shown at the beginning and ending credits of the movie, CHISUM, starring John Wayne. There is one painting in particular that begins the movie ... a lone horseman staring off into the land while under a sparse shady tree ... which then switches to the film's first frame and same shot of John Wayne's character looking out towards his land. Russ Vickers was a painter in realist or traditional style of western scenes, beginning with the Civil War and moving forward. He was born in Paris, Texas, and his father was a horse trader. He served in the Marines in World War II and as a combat artist in Korea. He had little formal schooling and spent about twenty years as a technical illustrator for the aerospace industry in Los Angeles, painting western genre in his spare time. In 1970, he took the correspondence course from the Famous Artists School and began showing his paintings in Sedona. From 1973, he lived in Tempe, Arizona and dedicated himself to full-time painting. Original Painting "Laying in Wait" by Ron Crooks

Original Painting "Laying in Wait" by Ron Crooks

By Ron Crooks

Located in Coeur d'Alene, ID

Oil on canvas; Framed. Ron painted about 200 oils of Western scenes a year. "I picked Western subjects because they let the artist use landscape, people, storytelling…I think the peak in art was the French Impressionist," he observes. "It is a looseness in style and the paintings that border abstract. I hope my style goes that way. My feeling is that if an artist lives to be 200, he becomes an abstract painter, boiling down all he wants to interpret into his abstract essence. Basically, all painting is abstract. A good painting is a good abstraction." Period: Last half of the 20th century. Oil on canvas. 48" x 36". Unframed. Sides of canvas painted so no frame necessary. North Idaho artist. On stretcher. Greg Parker has mastered the ability to capture the very essence of what he sees and experiences in an exceptional artistic capacity. Greg’s ability to bring to canvas the moments seen through the human eye in such exceptional craftsmanship is one to be recognized. Early in his youth, he found himself especially interested in nature and read all he could about naturalists like John Muir who captured young Greg’s imagination. Being an outdoorsman himself, Greg’s studio in the beautiful Northwest part of the United States provides a setting in which often overlooked beauty Greg successfully captures and shares on canvas.
