About the Item

"Gargoyles of Gotham" Photograph by Don Hamerman 24" x 36" (image size) 28" x 40" (sheet size) Black and white archival pigment print on acid-free paper. Signed, titled, numbered, and dated by the artist on the verso. Limited edition of 15. Artist's Statement: The Chrysler Building, architect William Van Alen’s 1930 art deco masterpiece was, for eleven months, the world’s tallest building, before being surpassed by the Empire State. Commissioned by Walter Chrysler as a real estate investment for his children, this iconic midtown NYC structure was awarded national landmark status in 1976. In 1981, while working on a magazine story about the “Gargoyles of Gotham,” I walked over to the Chrysler Building from my NYC apartment to photograph its gargoyles on the 60th floor. I’d been invited to appear after hours by a building superintendent, whom I paid with a 6 pack of beer, maybe two. He brought me to the 58th floor, where I climbed out onto a two story scaffolding lashed to the building on a setback. At the top of the stairs, tucked up under the eagle, itself designed to look like a Chrysler auto hood ornament, I captured this unique view. About the Artist: Don Hamerman has been making photographs since 1976. His images reside in corporate and private collections across the country, and museums including The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. His work has appeared in books, magazines and newspapers worldwide, from the Village Voice to Rolling Stone to The New York Times, New York Magazine, Fortune, Forbes and Architectural Digest, among many others.

Rare "Grasshopper" Form Accent Chair in Hand-Woven Silk & Linen

Rare "Grasshopper" Form Accent Chair in Hand-Woven Silk & Linen

Located in Stamford, CT

At a Glance: - Rare Mid-Century sculptural lounge chair with a dramatic grasshopper-inspired profile. - Solid white oak frame fully restored and finished in a warm medium brown. - Hand-woven Neeru Kumar Window Weave textile chosen for its subtle herringbone and diamond structure. - Belgian linen piping from Kerry Joyce that enhances the chair’s linear geometry. - A one of a kind statement piece that reads beautifully from every angle. In-Depth: When we source objects for our inventory, we gravitate toward pieces with a clear place in design history or those with an attractive presence and timeless lines. It is rare for us to encounter a chair that cannot be definitively identified or matched to a comparable reference during our research. When this does occur, and we find ourselves captivated yet without a verified provenance, the answer is always to acquire the piece for our collection. This chair is one of those discoveries. We believe it to be a rare, possibly one of a kind, grasshopper-form accent chair that we had the pleasure of restoring in its entirety. We were so taken by its sculptural frame that we approached the restoration with complete conviction. Our goal was to preserve the integrity of the design while selecting materials that enhance its timeless character. The dramatic z-form arms were originally finished in black paint. Once stripped, they revealed white oak with a beautiful grain pattern that we enriched with a warm medium brown stain. To complement and celebrate the inherent geometry of the frame, we turned to the Pat McGann...

Eames Soft-Pad Executive Chairs in Smoke Gray Leather by Herman Miller

Eames Soft-Pad Executive Chairs in Smoke Gray Leather by Herman Miller

By Charles and Ray Eames

Located in Stamford, CT

The great portfolio of Charles & Ray Eames is widely celebrated and serves as a model of inspiration for designers to this day. One of their most recognizable designs is the Aluminum Group line for Herman Miller from which these Soft Pad Executive Chairs were born. It is said that the Soft Pad variation was a design accident - cushions from the Eames Chaise found themselves draped over an Aluminum Group chair, and the rest is history. Whatever the story may be, the comfort of Charles & Ray’s Soft Pad seating perhaps rivals that of their famed Eames Lounge Chair. The Soft Pad collection consists of a Lounge Chair, a Low Back Management Chair, and this High Back Executive Chair. The design language is similar to the Eames Aluminum Group suite which sports a single “sling” of material which is tethered to two cast aluminum side rails and in this case, four plush cushions for optimal comfort. These chairs are equipped with a tilt mechanism with tension control as well as manual height adjustment. We have a large quantity of these Eames Soft Pad Executive Chairs...
