About the Item

Original US production still for Charlie Chaplin and Edna Purviance 1919 silent comedy. This early American short silent film was written by, directed by and stars Charlie Chaplin. In it Charlie works crazy hours at a hotel in rural Sunnyside, where he also helps on the farm. He eats on the run, grabbing his coffee and milking a cow into it, hovering a chicken over a frying pan to get fried eggs !. Charlie falls in love with the neighbour's daughter (played by Edna Purviance), but her father doesn't approve of him. Edna is courted by a city slicker who has been hurt in a car accident, and arrives at the hotel. When Charlie is shunned by Edna he tries to imitate the city slicker to get her attention, donning spats and a walking cane. This all ends rather ambiguously, as it is unclear if the final scene of Charlie kissing Edna is in fact real or a dream. This piece is conservation framed in a Sapele wood frame with card mounts and UV plexiglass. The size given is before framing. This piece would be shipped boxed and sent by Federal Express.
