About the Item

17th–18th Century French Decorative Textile and Wallpaper Designs, Plate LXXXVI This stunning chromolithograph, Plate LXXXVI from *L'Ornement Polychrome*, presents a collection of richly detailed textile and wallpaper designs from the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Combining the grandeur of Baroque with the elegance of early Rococo, these vibrant patterns reflect the decorative preferences of French aristocracy during the transition from the reign of Louis XIV to Louis XV. The sheet features nine individual panels, each showcasing intricate floral arrangements, stylized foliage, exotic birds, arabesques, and scrolling acanthus leaves. Dominant color tones include deep crimson, gold, blue, and green, complemented by delicate pinks, ivory, and turquoise. The larger central panel depicts an ornate symmetrical bouquet flanked by birds, blossoms, and elaborate scrollwork, likely inspired by silk brocades or woven damasks used in wall coverings, upholstery, and fashion. Surrounding panels offer complementary variations: gold-on-red arabesques, stylized medallions containing floral arrangements, and repetitive scroll motifs ideal for repeating textile patterns. Many of the designs include framed motifs and vegetal cartouches that would have been used for both flat decoration and textile embroidery. The print was lithographed by Dufour & F. Durin and published by Firmin-Didot in Paris around 1869 as part of Auguste Racinet’s encyclopedic *L'Ornement Polychrome*. Racinet’s project aimed to preserve and inspire historical decorative design, and this plate is a testament to the luxurious and detailed artistry of French ornament during this period. These designs are highly valued today for their timeless beauty and serve as inspiration for interior designers, textile artists, and historians specializing in historic French decor. Condition: Excellent condition. No tears, foxing, or repairs. Strong impression with richly preserved colors. Marginal toning only; image area pristine. Printed on thick, stable paper with full margins. Framing tips: A gold-leaf or dark wood frame will enhance the rich tones of the print. Use a warm ivory or pale blue mount to harmonize with the background hues. Ideal for traditional, maximalist, or French chateau-style interiors. Technique: Chromolithograph Maker: Dufour & Durin after Racinet, Paris, c.1869
