About the Item

19th-Century Lithograph of a Greyhound and English Mastiff in Elegant Detail --- Description: This striking 19th-century lithograph features two historically significant dog breeds: the Greyhound (De Windhond) and the English Mastiff (De Engelsche dog). Originally published in *De Zoogdieren: afgebeeld en in hunne levenswijze geschetst*, this print exemplifies early zoological illustrations' dedication to anatomical precision and lifelike representation. The Greyhound, one of the oldest dog breeds, has origins tracing back to ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome. Revered for its speed, agility, and hunting abilities, it was historically used for coursing and later became a favorite in racing and companionship. The English Mastiff, a large and powerful breed, has been known since antiquity, used as a guard dog, war dog, and protector. These dogs were widely kept in England for estate security and have since become loyal companions known for their gentle temperament. Created by C.C. G. Zool. and printed by La Haye & J. L. G. V., this lithograph is an excellent addition for collectors of antique canine prints, zoological illustrations, and historical representations of domestic animals. It showcases the beauty and functionality of these two iconic breeds. Keywords: 19th Century, Lithograph, Natural History, Zoology, Greyhound, English Mastiff, Dog Breeds, Scientific Illustration, Antique Print, Animal Engraving, Wildlife Art, Taxonomy, Netherlands, La Haye, J.L.G.V. --- Condition Summary: The print is in good condition, with mild age-related toning and some foxing present, primarily along the margins. The lithographic details remain crisp, with well-defined shading that enhances the form and musculature of the dogs. The edges show minor irregularities due to historical binding, but there are no significant tears or folds. The print remains highly collectible and suitable for framing. --- Framing Tips: To best present this lithograph, use an acid-free mat in a neutral tone such as off-white or light cream to highlight the fine details. A dark wooden or black frame will provide an elegant contrast, emphasizing the shading and anatomical precision of the illustrations. UV-protective glass is recommended to prevent fading over time. If displayed with other lithographs of dog breeds, consider uniform framing for a cohesive and professional appearance.
