About the Item

Albany New York Hudson River View – Antique Steel Engraving 19th Century Description: This finely engraved mid-19th century view depicts Albany, the historic capital of the state of New York, situated along the banks of the Hudson River. The print was published in the renowned illustrated geographical series Meyers Universum by the Bibliographisches Institut in Germany during the mid-1800s. These engravings were created to introduce European audiences to notable cities, landscapes, and landmarks across the rapidly developing United States. The composition presents a tranquil river landscape leading toward the distant skyline of Albany. In the foreground a small boat carrying a horse and passengers crosses the calm waters, illustrating everyday transport typical of American river towns in the early nineteenth century. Lush trees frame the riverbanks, creating a picturesque setting characteristic of the romantic landscape style that was popular in illustrated travel publications of the period. Across the water the city of Albany appears in the distance, its buildings and church spires rising gently above the shoreline. Founded by the Dutch in the 17th century and originally known as Fort Orange, Albany became one of the oldest and most important cities in colonial North America. By the time this engraving was produced, the city had developed into a significant commercial and transportation center. Albany’s strategic location on the Hudson River made it a vital gateway between New York City and the interior of the continent. The completion of the Erie Canal in 1825 greatly enhanced the city’s importance, linking the Hudson River to the Great Lakes and transforming Albany into a major hub of trade and migration. Goods, agricultural products, and raw materials from the expanding American Midwest passed through Albany on their way to global markets. The delicate steel engraving technique used in this print allowed the engraver to create extremely fine lines and subtle tonal shading. This method produced crisp impressions that captured both architectural detail and the atmospheric qualities of the landscape, making such prints highly valued illustrations in geographical publications of the nineteenth century. Today this engraving serves as both an attractive decorative landscape and a historical record of one of America’s oldest and most important river cities during the era of early industrial expansion. Condition report: Good condition for its age with light age toning and occasional minor spotting mainly in the margins. Plate mark visible. Paper remains stable and well preserved. Framing tips: This print frames beautifully in a dark walnut, black, or ebonized frame combined with a wide ivory or museum-white mat. Such framing enhances the delicate engraving lines and creates a refined presentation suitable for both classic and contemporary interiors.
