About the Item

Alexander Calder - "Three Onions" Artist's proof on vellum, 1965, signed lower right. Original frame. H: 51 x W 71 cm. The American artist Alexander Calder was very attached to France, where he spent half of his life. During his years in Paris (1926-1933), he met avant-garde artists like Man Ray, Le Corbusier, Léger, Picasso and Mondrian. In 1954, he settled in Saché, south of Tours, in the house known as "François I". Then in 1963, he decided to build a large studio on the site of the Carroi overlooking the Indre valley. If Alexander Calder remains famous today for his mobile sculptures, we should not overshadow his graphic work, in particular his gouaches on paper and his marvelous lithographs published and printed by Maeght in the Sixties. Our edition of “Three Onions” is one of the very rare signed by the artist.
