About the Item

Ancient Scythians and Asia Minor Costumes – Antique Ethnographic Print, c.1905 This original early 20th-century ethnographic plate presents a detailed depiction of Scythian and Asia Minor peoples, based on archaeological and historical sources. Published by Ernst Wasmuth A.-G. in Berlin around 1905, the sheet illustrates two separate scenes: above, a group of Scythian warriors with horses, shields, and bows; below, men and women of Asia Minor in richly patterned garments, shown with characteristic tools, ornaments, and accessories. The print belongs to one of the most influential European costume and ethnography atlases of the period. These plates were produced to document the visual heritage of ancient cultures with careful archaeological fidelity. Max Tilke, the artist responsible for many drawings in the series, is widely recognized as a pioneer in the systematic illustration of global costume traditions. His works are still valued by historians, designers, museum curators, and collectors of ethnographic material. The plate offers beautifully composed line drawings with fine detailing: horse tack, patterned trousers, headgear with fur trim, embroidered tunics, and distinctive Scythian weapons such as recurved bows and ceremonial shields. The Asia Minor group below shows elegant early garments with drapery, veils, jewelry, and domestic objects. Together, the two scenes give a vivid impression of life, attire, and social interaction in the ancient cultures of the Eurasian steppe and Anatolia. Because the sheet retains its original wide margins and printed captions in German, English, and French, it presents exceptionally well for framing. Its soft antique paper tone suits both classic and modern interiors, particularly when paired with a neutral mount or a warm natural-wood frame. This plate also pairs well with other ethnographic or archaeological prints, or can stand alone as a strong decorative statement. A fine example for collectors of antique costume studies, early archaeology, Near Eastern history, or educational wall art. Printed by Ernst Wasmuth A.-G., Berlin, c.1905 Condition report: Overall very good for age. Light toning at the margins, tiny specks expected from early 20th-century paper. No folds, tears, or major defects. Wide margins fully preserved. Framing suggestion: A warm ivory or sand-colored mat with a natural oak, walnut, or black frame enhances the historic feel. A thin inner line in muted terracotta or antique gold gives an elegant archaeological look. Technique: Collotype / line lithograph Maker: Max Tilke (attributed), Berlin, c.1905 Keywords: Scythians, Asia Minor, ancient costume, ethnographic print, archaeology, Max Tilke, antique plate, Near East, historical dress, Berlin Wasmuth, steppe culture, ancient warriors.
