About the Item

Antique Beetle Chromolithographs, European Coleoptera Plates, Calwer 1893 Description: A striking and highly decorative set of six late 19th-century natural history plates depicting European beetles, drawn from the influential entomological publication Käferbuch – Naturgeschichte der Käfer Europas by German naturalist C. G. Calwer. Issued in the expanded fifth edition of 1893 and published in Stuttgart by Julius Hoffmann, these plates were edited by Professor Dr. G. Jäger and revised by Dr. G. Stierlin, reflecting the most advanced entomological knowledge of the period. Originally intended “Zum Handgebrauche für Sammler” (for practical use by collectors), Calwer’s *Käferbuch* became one of the most widely consulted illustrated guides to European beetles in the late 19th century. These plates combine scientific precision with strong decorative appeal, presenting dozens of species in carefully organized grids, each rendered in rich chromolithographic color. Among the many species illustrated are jewel beetles such as Buprestis and Chalcophora, known for their iridescent metallic hues; click beetles (Elateridae), recognizable by their elongated bodies; fireflies (Lampyridae), including Lampyris noctiluca; and a variety of longhorn beetles (Cerambycidae) with distinctive antennae. Also depicted are richly patterned leaf beetles (Chrysomelidae) and scarab-like forms, offering a fascinating cross-section of European beetle diversity. The prints are visually captivating, with a refined palette of greens, reds, golds, and deep blacks that bring out the natural brilliance of these insects. Their symmetrical arrangement and scientific clarity make them equally suitable for collectors of natural history and for sophisticated interior design applications, whether displayed as a grouped set or individually. This decorative suite is ideal for creating a cohesive gallery wall, particularly in libraries, studies, or modern interiors seeking a touch of scientific elegance and historical charm. Condition report: Good antique condition with age-related toning and light foxing consistent with late 19th-century paper. Some minor edge wear and handling marks visible. Margins intact. Colors remain strong and vibrant. Plate marks not applicable, as issued as chromolithographs. Framing tips: These prints work beautifully as a unified set in identical frames. Consider dark walnut or ebonized frames with off-white or ivory mats to enhance the richness of the colors. A tight, evenly spaced grid presentation (2×3 layout) creates a strong visual statement, while floating mounts can emphasize the full sheet and antique character. Note: These prints are original antique chromolithographs and not reproductions. They are offered unframed. Technique: Chromolithograph Maker: C. G. Calwer, Germany, published Julius Hoffmann, Stuttgart, 1893
