About the Item

Antique Bible Print Set, Genesis & Exodus Scenes, Mortier c.1700 This attractive group of six original early-18th-century copper engravings forms part of a larger Genesis and Exodus series published by Pieter Mortier in Amsterdam circa 1700. Each sheet contains two finely engraved biblical scenes, together presenting a rich narrative cycle drawn from both the Old Testament's Book of Genesis and Book of Exodus. Mortier was one of Amsterdam’s leading publishers, known for producing engravings of exceptional clarity and refinement. These works exemplify the Dutch Baroque tradition, combining classical composition with expressive storytelling and finely rendered landscapes. The engravings are characterized by balanced scenes, detailed figure work, and subtle tonal variation achieved through masterful line engraving. The six sheets illustrate a variety of important biblical episodes. One sheet depicts the elders of Israel appearing before Pharaoh, together with Aaron casting down his rod before the Egyptian ruler. Another presents the oppression of the Israelites in Egypt and the daughter of Pharaoh discovering the infant Moses among the reeds. A third sheet shows Lot taking refuge with his daughters after the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, alongside Abimelech restoring Sarah to Abraham. The fourth engraving illustrates Moses before the Burning Bush and Aaron meeting Moses in the wilderness. A fifth sheet portrays the patriarch Jacob blessing Ephraim and Manasseh and Jacob blessing his twelve sons before his death. The final sheet depicts Joseph visiting his dying father Jacob and the funeral procession carrying Jacob to his burial place. Throughout the series, the engraver skillfully combines dramatic narrative with elegant architectural settings, sweeping landscapes, and carefully observed human figures. The scenes are rendered with remarkable precision, reflecting the high standards of Dutch engraving at the turn of the eighteenth century. The visual storytelling and strong decorative qualities make these engravings particularly appealing for collectors of biblical art, Dutch Old Master prints, religious iconography, and early illustrated books. Special note: This is a set of original antique engravings, not reproductions. All items we offer are authentic period works of art over 100 years old. The prints are sold unframed; any framed images are shown for presentation and interior inspiration only and may not always be to scale.
