About the Item

Antique Bird Print of Ruffs and Reeves in Breeding Plumage, 19th Century This exquisite 19th-century bird print features a group of *Ruffs and Reeves* (Philomachus pugnax) in vivid detail, captured during their breeding season when the males don their extravagant plumage. The scene shows several males, each with a unique display of ornate ruffs and richly patterned feathers, competing for attention in a lush wetland landscape. A female, or reeve, stands modestly in the foreground near a reflective pool, providing a striking contrast to the flamboyant males. The print is a chromolithograph, a printing technique that allowed for rich, layered color through the use of multiple lithographic stones. Chromolithography became the standard for high-quality scientific illustration in the mid-to-late 19th century, valued for its accuracy and brilliance. Here, it is used to great effect, bringing out the texture of the feathers, the play of light on water, and the subtle shifts in the green marshland behind the birds. This plate was originally published as part of *Naturgeschichte der Vögel Mitteleuropas* (Natural History of the Birds of Central Europe), the monumental ornithological series by Johann Friedrich Naumann, a pioneering German ornithologist considered the founder of Central European ornithology. Naumann's dedication to scientific observation and artistic integrity made his publications highly influential throughout Europe and a cornerstone for both zoological study and fine decorative art. This print will appeal to bird lovers, natural history collectors, and those with an appreciation for antique scientific illustration. It also makes an elegant decorative piece, ideal for traditional or nature-inspired interiors. Condition: Very well-preserved with strong original color. Minor age-related toning in the margins but no damage to the image. A crisp impression with excellent chromolithographic detail. Framing tips: Frame with a warm wood like maple or light walnut and use a soft green, beige, or cream mat to highlight the earthy colors. A classic choice for study, library, or nature-themed decor. Use UV glass to preserve the vibrant tones.
