About the Item

Antique Chromolithograph of Flamingos – Phoenicopterus roseus, c.1890 A magnificent late 19th-century chromolithograph depicting the Greater Flamingo (Phoenicopterus roseus) in different ages and plumages. The plate shows a very old male, a two-year-old male, and a one-year-old female, carefully rendered with their characteristic long necks, slender legs, and vivid pink plumage. In the background, a flock of flamingos wades through shallow waters at sunset, creating a dramatic and atmospheric scene. Please note that we sell the print only and not the matting board or frame. The artist has captured both the elegance and the striking coloration of this iconic waterbird, which inhabits lagoons, estuaries, and coastal wetlands across southern Europe, Africa, and Asia. The chromolithographic technique provides exceptional depth and vibrancy, with fine detail in the feathers and subtle transitions in the sky and water. This print was part of a celebrated ornithological series documenting European and exotic birds with scientific precision and decorative flair. The plate is signed with the initials “A.G.” in the lower left corner, identifying the contributing artist. Please note that we sell the print only and not the matting board or frame. Condition report: Good condition with strong, well-preserved colors. Light age toning in margins and faint foxing spots to the left edge, consistent with age. Plate mark clearly visible. No tears or major blemishes. Not supplied with matting board or frame. Framing tips: A gilt or gold-accented frame with a light cream or ivory mat will enhance the warm tones of the plumage and sunset background. For a more modern presentation, a black or walnut frame with a soft off-white mat provides a clean and elegant contrast. Technique: Chromolithograph Maker: A.G. (artist/engraver), c.1890, Europe
