About the Item

Antique Marine Etching Fishing Boat at Sea - Nelson Dawson, British - ca.1910 Description: This evocative marine etching depicts a small sailing fishing boat riding over rolling waves beneath an open sky, a solitary fisherman seated at the stern while the dark sails catch the wind. The composition captures a moment of movement and tension on the water, rendered with delicate etched lines and subtle tonal shading. The dramatic diagonal of the sail contrasts with the horizontal sweep of the sea, creating a striking balance typical of early twentieth-century British marine etching. The work was created by the British artist Nelson Ethelred Dawson (1859–1941), an accomplished painter, jeweler, and printmaker associated with the Arts and Crafts movement. Dawson was widely admired for his atmospheric depictions of coastal life and maritime scenes, often portraying fishing boats and small sailing craft along the English coast. His etchings are strongly influenced by the tonal marine studies of James McNeill Whistler, combining economy of line with a refined sense of atmosphere. During the early twentieth century Dawson produced a series of small maritime etchings portraying North Sea and English Channel fishing vessels navigating changing weather and seas. These works were admired for their spontaneity and painterly quality, capturing the spirit of working boats rather than detailed naval precision. The present print belongs to this group and dates to approximately 1910, when Dawson was most active as a painter-etcher. The image is printed with a clear plate mark and wide margins on fine laid paper. The restrained monochrome palette and elegant composition make it particularly appealing for collectors of marine art, British printmaking, and Arts and Crafts period works. Small maritime etchings like this are also highly sought after by interior designers, as they frame beautifully and bring a refined nautical character to coastal interiors or classic libraries. Today Dawson’s etchings are collected both for their artistic quality and their place within the revival of original printmaking in Britain during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Works such as this offer an intimate and atmospheric glimpse into traditional maritime life. Condition: Good condition for its age with light overall toning to the paper and minor edge wear consistent with age. The plate mark is clearly visible. The image itself remains strong and well printed. Framing tips: This print frames beautifully with a generous ivory or warm white mat and a dark walnut or ebonized frame. A subtle museum glass finish enhances the delicate etched lines and gives the work an elegant presentation suitable for both classic and coastal interiors.
