Antique Utah Canyon Print, Weber River & Sheep Rock Canyon View, 1861 Description: A finely detailed mid-19th century American landscape engraving titled Second or Sheep Rock Cañon of Weber River, depicting a dramatic canyon scene within the Wasatch Mountains of Utah. The composition captures a rugged stretch of the Weber River as it winds through steep rock formations, with a group of mounted figures traversing the rocky foreground, emphasizing both the scale and the exploratory nature of the landscape. Drawn from nature during the Pacific Railroad Surveys, this view reflects the intersection of scientific observation and romantic landscape art. The sharply rendered canyon walls, textured rock formations, and calm river create a compelling contrast between movement and stillness. The distinctive rock formation—likely the namesake “Sheep Rock”—rises prominently, giving the scene both geological and visual identity. This engraving was produced as part of the Reports of Explorations and Surveys, commissioned by the U.S. government to identify viable routes for a transcontinental railroad. These publications are among the earliest visual records of the American West, documenting regions that were largely unknown to Eastern audiences at the time. The image was drawn by F.W. Egloffstein, a leading topographical artist known for his precise and atmospheric renderings, and engraved by C. Schumann. It was printed in Washington, D.C. around 1860–1861, likely by Selmar Siebert’s engraving establishment. Today, these works are highly valued for their historical importance, artistic quality, and strong decorative appeal. This example is an original antique engraving. It is not a modern reproduction.
