Aylmer Bourke Lambert Portrait, Botanical Stipple Engraving, William Evans 1810 This refined early 19th-century stipple engraving portrays Aylmer Bourke Lambert, Esq. F.R.S. F.A.S., one of the most important British botanists and collectors of his generation. Published in 1810, the print was engraved by William Evans after an original drawing by Henry Edridge, and captures Lambert seated in a calm, thoughtful pose, rendered with the soft tonal delicacy that makes stipple engraving so appealing to collectors of portraiture and scientific history alike. Lambert is remembered as a founding figure of British botany and as a long-serving Vice President of the Linnean Society of London. His name is closely associated with one of the great botanical collections of the period: a herbarium said to have contained more than 50,000 specimens. He is also celebrated for his major publication A Description of the Genus Pinus, an ambitious attempt to record all known pine species of the time.
