About the Item

Title: Classical Roman Altars & Antiquities Engraving, Montfaucon 1721 Description: This finely engraved early eighteenth-century antiquarian plate originates from Bernard de Montfaucon’s celebrated work *Antiquity Explained and Represented in Sculptures*, published in London in 1721. Montfaucon’s monumental encyclopedia of classical antiquities is regarded as one of the foundational works of archaeology and art history, bringing together visual studies of ancient Roman and Greek sculpture, inscriptions, architecture, decorative arts, and ceremonial objects from important European collections. The engraving illustrates a remarkable series of classical Roman altar forms, cippi, pedestals, and decorative antiquities adorned with mythological figures, inscriptions, masks, and ornamental reliefs. Several pieces depict dancing classical figures and Bacchic imagery, while others feature richly carved decorative motifs inspired by ancient Roman marble sculpture and funerary monuments. The composition reflects the eighteenth-century fascination with the rediscovery and documentation of the ancient world that fueled the rise of neoclassicism throughout Europe. Executed with exceptional delicacy through copperplate engraving, the plate combines scholarly precision with strong decorative appeal. The careful linear shading and elegant symmetry give the objects sculptural depth while preserving the refined clarity intended by Montfaucon’s publication. Such engravings were highly influential among collectors, architects, artists, and Grand Tour travelers seeking inspiration from classical antiquity. Today the engraving displays beautifully as both an academic antiquarian study and a refined decorative artwork. Its monochromatic palette and sculptural imagery make it especially suitable for libraries, studies, classic interiors, and contemporary spaces inspired by neoclassical design. The plate pairs exceptionally well with dark walnut, museum black, or lightly gilt frames combined with warm ivory or parchment-toned mats. This is an original eighteenth-century copperplate engraving printed in London in 1721, not a modern reproduction. All items we offer are authentic period works of art over 100 years old. The engraving is sold unframed; any framed images shown are for presentation and interior inspiration only and may not always be to scale. Condition: Good overall condition with age-related toning, scattered foxing, and minor edge wear consistent with age. Wide margins preserved. Framing tips: Displays particularly well in dark walnut, ebonized, or museum black frames with a generous ivory mat, enhancing the sculptural quality and fine engraved detail of the composition. Technique: Copperplate engraving Maker: Bernard de Montfaucon, France, 1721
