About the Item

Title: 'Elegant 1880 Lithographs of Ducks: White-headed Duck and Northern Pintail' These beautifully hand-colored lithographs, presented in a cream matting board, were published in 1880 by J. F. Richter in Hamburg. They depict two species of ducks with exceptional detail, combining scientific accuracy with artistic finesse. The first print illustrates the Weissköpfige oder Ruder-Ente (White-headed Duck), scientifically known as *Anas mersa* or *leukocephala*. This duck is shown in a serene water setting, easily recognizable by its white head and darker body, a key characteristic of this species. The second print portrays the Spiess- oder Fasan-Ente (Northern Pintail Duck), scientifically known as *Anas acuta*. This elegant bird is depicted with its long neck and striking plumage, including a distinctive white stripe running down its throat and the male’s pointed tail feathers. What makes these works particularly interesting is their artistic and historical significance. Created during the height of 19th-century ornithological studies, they reflect the era’s dedication to documenting and celebrating wildlife. Printed in Hamburg, these lithographs are fine examples of meticulous craftsmanship, combining vibrant colors and lifelike composition. These illustrations serve as both a celebration of natural history and a timeless piece of art, making them ideal for collectors or display.

Antique Wild Duck Print Mallard Ducks Wetland Scene Chromolithograph c.1895 Description: This attractive late 19th-century natural history print titled Wild Duck presents a serene wetland scene featuring mallard ducks in their natural habitat. The composition captures several birds in different positions, including a male mallard with its characteristic green head in the foreground, alongside a female duck gliding through calm water, while additional birds rest along the bank in the background. Executed as a high-quality chromolithograph, the print displays soft tonal transitions and subtle coloration typical of refined zoological illustrations of the period. The gentle palette of greens, browns, and muted blues creates a harmonious and calming scene, while the detailed rendering of feathers and posture reflects careful observation combined with artistic sensitivity. The composition balances scientific accuracy with decorative appeal, making it both informative and visually pleasing. The water reflections, vegetation, and natural setting add depth and atmosphere, giving the print a tranquil and timeless character. This piece works particularly well in a wide range of interiors, including classic studies, country homes, and contemporary spaces seeking a natural or relaxed aesthetic. It also pairs beautifully with other bird or wildlife prints to create a cohesive gallery wall. Condition report: Good condition overall. Light age toning and scattered foxing, mainly in the margins. Minor edge wear consistent with age. Image remains clear and visually appealing. Framing tips: Ideal for a dark walnut or black frame with a generous ivory or cream mat to enhance the soft tones and fine detail. Also suitable for lighter interiors with a natural oak frame and neutral mat for a softer, more contemporary presentation. Keywords: antique duck print...
