About the Item

Exquisite 1806 Shiva and Vishnu Harihara Print - Hindu Art Treasure Description: This remarkable antique print, titled "Brouma, Dieu Créateur," depicts Brahma, the Hindu god of creation and a member of the sacred Trimurti. Brahma is illustrated with four heads, symbolizing his all-seeing wisdom and omniscience, seated in a meditative pose on a lotus pedestal. The deity holds symbolic items, including prayer beads and a flame, representing spiritual purity and divine energy. The intricate details of Brahma’s ornate headdress, jewelry, and flowing garments are rendered with precision, showcasing the artist’s skill in capturing the divine essence of this revered deity. The copperplate engraving was created by Jean-Baptiste Marie Poisson after an illustration by Pierre Sonnerat, a distinguished French naturalist and explorer. It was published in Sonnerat’s seminal work, Voyage aux Indes Orientales et à la Chine (Dentu, Paris, 1806), which chronicled his travels and observations of Eastern cultures. The copperplate engraving technique, widely used in the early 19th century, allowed for the fine detailing seen in the deity’s elaborate attire and the delicate shading throughout the composition. This print offers a fascinating glimpse into early 19th-century European interpretations of Hindu theology, reflecting the period’s growing interest in Eastern spirituality. The aged paper and subtle patina add to its historical allure, making it a prized piece for collectors of religious art, ethnographic studies, or early 19th-century engravings. Its connection to Sonnerat’s influential travelogue further enhances its cultural and historical value. Condition Report: Good condition for its age, with minor foxing and light browning on edges. Slight creasing at corners and minimal margin wear, but the central image remains clear and intact. No tears or significant damage observed. Framing Tips: Use a double mat in a neutral shade to highlight the print's details. Select a dark wooden frame to complement its antique style. Choose UV-protective glass to prevent fading, and avoid direct sunlight exposure.
