"First Blow for Liberty: To the Memory of the Patriots of 1775" Engraving, 1868

About the Item

This is a hand-colored stipple and line engraving entitled "First Blow for Liberty," after the renowned artist Felix O.C. Darley. The composition is a spirited depiction of the Battles of Lexington and Concord. At center, a colonist loads his weapon, amidst the chaos around him.. Two colonists lay wounded on the ground, while more run to join and fight against the impending march of British redcoats. The work was beautifully engraved by Alexander Hay Richie and published by Mason Bros., in New York in 1868. The Battles of Lexington and Concord, fought on April 19, 1775, were the first of the American Revolutionary War. On the night of April 18, 1775, hundreds of British troops marched from Boston to the nearby towns of Lexington and Concord in order to seize the arms cache of the Massachusetts colonists. Tensions had been building for many years between residents of the thirteen American colonies and the British authorities, particularly in Massachusetts. The British hoped that by seizing the stockpile of weapons, they could suppress the possibility of rebellion. Patriot spies soon got wind of the plan, and thanks to an intricate alarm system including Paul Revere's midnight ride, they were ready to meet the British troops. Exchanging light fire in Lexington, the British continued their march towards the neighboring town of Concord. There, the local colonist and militia companies were able to group together and keep the British held at the stone bridge into town, away from their stores of weapons, farms, homes, and supplies. Shots were exchanged, including the famous “shot heard round the world.” The colonists outnumbered the British and forced a hasty retreat. The British were continually ambushed all the way back to Boston by minutemen shooting from behind trees, rock walls, and buildings. The print is titled “First Blow for Liberty”and is dedicated at the bottom title margin “To the Memory of the Patriots of 1775”. The bottom margin also is engraved with an excerpt from the “Concord Hymn” by Ralph Waldo Emmerson. The excerpt reads, "Here once the embattled farmers stood and fired the shot heard round the world." Emerson penned “Concord Hymn” in 1837 for the dedication of a battle monument at the site of the North Bridge. CONDITION: Good condition overall. Stipple and line engraving, a strong impression. Engraving is hand-colored. Hand coloring is faded, but still attractive. Paper is healthy, with light scuffs and surface wear to outer margins, but no significant tears. Publication and title lines are intact and visible. Full Sheet Dimensions: 27” H x 35” W. Engraving has been artfully framed to the highest archival standards with acid-free mats, wooden spandrel, UV Plexiglas, and a custom wooden frame. Framed Dimensions: 32" H x 38 1/2" W x 1" D.
