About the Item

A fantastic and oddly alluring large lithograph by renowned Mexican artist José Luis Cuevas (1934-2017) titled "Prisoners." The work features somewhat grotesque, distorted figures (a specter of death and a man with an angel-wing-like backdrop) in a surrealist scene out of Dante's Inferno. The work is hand-pencil signed, numbered (41/100), and dated (1968) by Cuevas along the lower edge. Cuevas was drawn to the darker side of life. His art often depicts strange warped figures and the debasement of humanity and was frequently viewed as shocking and controversial. Today, Cuevas' works can be found in numerous prominent collections, such as The Art Institute of Chicago, The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, among others. The Jose Luis Cuevas Museum in Mexico City honors his contribution to Mexican art with a contemporary collection of his work The print is from a Los Angeles private art collection. The piece has been professionally framed floating under acrylic. Would be a wonderful eye-catching accent artwork in about any setting. Frame dimensions: 25.75" high, 33.75" wide, 1.75" deep
