About the Item

Medieval Floral Borders – Illuminated Manuscript Motifs, Plate L, c.1869 This richly detailed chromolithograph from Plate L of L'Ornement Polychrome by Albert Racinet presents a captivating series of vertical floral bands and scrolling botanical borders, derived from Middle Ages manuscript illumination and decorative arts. Each panel in this composition offers a distinct variation of stylized foliage and blossoms, all rendered with exquisite attention to form, rhythm, and color. The designs, ranging from slender curving tendrils with tiny forget-me-nots and daisies to bold acanthus and thistle leaves, evoke the refined craftsmanship found in Gothic-era book decoration and ecclesiastical embroidery. The upper panels, numbered 3, 6, 11, and 12, feature naturalistic plant forms entwined with gold-leaf-like scrolls, often interspersed with charming floral clusters in blue, white, and pink tones. In the center, a soft pink leafy frond rises with elegance amid red strawberries and delicate ground covers. Below, a red ornamental frieze provides contrast and structure. The lower half of the plate continues this botanical narrative with more stylized vegetal forms, subtly incorporating gothic scrolls and a tapestry-like composition. These were historically used not only in manuscript margins but also in textile, wood, and architectural ornamentation. Lithographed by Durin and printed by Firmin-Didot in Paris, this plate exemplifies the 19th-century effort to document and celebrate historical design for the benefit of artisans, designers, and scholars during the decorative arts revival. Racinet’s *L'Ornement Polychrome* remains one of the most influential compilations of global and historical ornamentation ever produced. Perfect for interior designers, art historians, or collectors of illuminated art, this print provides both visual pleasure and valuable historical reference. Condition: Excellent. Strong colors and clean margins. Minor toning to the outer paper edge consistent with age; image area pristine. Framing tips: Ideal in a gold or dark oak frame with an ivory mat and inner gold fillet. Use a tall rectangular frame to echo the vertical nature of the botanical bands. Technique: Chromolithograph Maker: Firmin-Didot, Paris, after Albert Racinet, c.1869
