Title: Original Garden Croton (Joseph's Coat) Botanical Chromolithograph, c. 1880
Description:
An exceptional original antique botanical chromolithograph depicting Codiaeum variegatum, better known as the Garden Croton or Joseph's Coat. Celebrated for its striking variegated foliage in shades of green, yellow, orange and red, this tropical ornamental plant has long been prized in botanical gardens and Victorian conservatories. The plate also includes finely rendered botanical studies of the flowers and fruit, reflecting the scientific precision of nineteenth-century botanical illustration.
The artwork was painted from life on the island of Java by the renowned Dutch botanical artist Berthe Hoola van Nooten (1817–1892). Her masterwork, Fleurs, Fruits et Feuillages Choisis de l'Ile de Java, is among the finest botanical publications devoted to the extraordinary flora of the Dutch East Indies. The plates were printed in vivid chromolithography by P. De Pannemaeker of Ghent and published in the third edition issued in Brussels around 1880 by Librairie Européenne C. Muquardt.
This is an original antique print, printed circa 1880, and not a modern reproduction or later copy.
