Whirling Dervish, Indian Dervish, and Turkish Devotion – Engraving, 1723 This striking copperplate engraving from 1723 presents four finely detailed figures representing spiritual devotion and ascetic practice in the Ottoman and Indian worlds. Each panel within the print captures a specific persona of religious life, arranged in a balanced composition typical of the early 18th-century ethnographic works found in *Cérémonies et Coutumes Religieuses de tous les Peuples du Monde*. Numbered Plate 130 from Volume V, this engraving was designed to illustrate the diversity of Islamic devotion and related practices across cultural boundaries. In the upper left, we see a “Dervich ou Moine Turc qui tourne par devotion” — a whirling dervish performing the Sufi turning ritual. His calm expression and raised arm indicate spiritual ecstasy achieved through movement. This is a representation of the Mevlevi order, known for its ceremonial whirling as a form of dhikr (remembrance of God). To the right, the “Saka” is depicted leading a mule bearing two large water containers. Described as a charitable dervish, the saka distributes water to the public as a humble act of generosity and piety, exemplifying the Islamic virtue of charitable giving (*sadaqah*). In the bottom left, a “Turc qui fait sa prière” shows a man in deep prayer, seated cross-legged on a carpet with his hands poised in reverence. The simplicity of the interior setting directs full attention to the contemplative focus of the figure, representing the orthodox daily prayer (*salat*) central to Islamic practice. The final figure at bottom right, the “Dervich des Indes,” portrays a spiritual devotee from India in flowing robes with a distinct air of theatrical motion. Unlike the Mevlevi dervish, this figure seems caught mid-step in a ritual or invocation, suggesting the variety of mystical expression among South Asian Sufi orders. The sheet is in very good condition for its age, showing some typical age-toning and minor spots primarily in the margins. Plate marks are strong, and the impression is sharp. There is no loss to image detail. For framing, a neutral mat in sand or ivory would highlight the tonal range of the engraving. A thin black or antique gold frame would complement the historic character while allowing the individual portraits to speak for themselves. This print is ideal for collectors interested in Islamic studies, Ottoman culture, or visual anthropology.
