About the Item

This exceptional and highly textured vintage 1979 fiber art tapestry is a quintessential, documented work by the acclaimed American textile artist Don Freedman. Distributed by Interlude Inc. (Newark, NJ) as Design No. 370, the large-scale, handwoven wall hanging depicts a striking modernist composition of soaring seagulls in flight against a layered, multi-toned landscape background. Freedman masterfully employs an organic palette of deep espresso, warm ochre, and natural cream tones, expertly contrasting a flat-woven jute and wool ground with heavily raised, thick-pile loop-hooked techniques that give the main birds an incredible three-dimensional sculptural presence. The multimedia textile consists of a handmade composition of 55% jute, 20% wool, 15% wood, and 10% cotton, featuring a delicate pair of stylized, carved wooden birds applied to the left quadrant that adds a wonderful kinetic layer to the design. Suspended from its original dark-stained wooden hanging dowels, this iconic piece of mid-century bohemian modernism measures 53 by 32.5 inches. It remains in excellent vintage condition, complete with its original pottery signature tile intact on the lower right corner and its fully detailed, authentic maker's copyright and material labels preserved on the verso. Key words : Boho or Bohemian Style , BEACH Life or Coastal Living .

Vintage American Tapestry Wall Hanging, Hand-Woven Wool, Flying Cranes Pattern

Vintage American Tapestry Wall Hanging, Hand-Woven Wool, Flying Cranes Pattern

Located in Barrington, IL

This exquisite vintage hand-woven tapestry captures the timeless beauty of a flock of cranes in graceful migration, rendered in a harmonious palette of soft autumnal earth tones. The artist’s sensitive use of color and movement gives the piece a remarkable sense of depth and rhythm, allowing the birds to appear as if they are gliding effortlessly across the textile surface. Woven entirely by hand, this tapestry reflects the enduring artistry of traditional weaving techniques, where each thread contributes to a painterly, almost lyrical composition. The gentle transitions between warm browns, muted golds, and subtle neutrals create a calming yet visually rich presence. Equally beautiful when displayed as wall art tapestry or used as a rug on the floor.
