About the Item

This French Aubusson tapestry, dating from the late 19th century, presents a refined pastoral scene inspired by 18th-century Rococo compositions. The elegant subject depicts finely dressed figures resting beside a gently flowing stream within a wooded landscape, rendered with delicate facial expressions, graceful movement, and a soft, harmonious color palette of greens, warm ochres, muted blues, and subtle pinks. The surrounding decorative border, enriched with scrolling motifs and stylized ornaments, is characteristic of traditional Aubusson weaving. Woven primarily in wool, the tapestry displays the painterly quality, tonal depth, and nuanced shading for which Aubusson workshops are particularly celebrated. The composition remains well-balanced and highly decorative, making it an excellent wall piece for both classical and eclectic interiors. The tapestry shows authentic signs of age and use, fully consistent with a late 19th-century textile. There are several horizontal splits and areas of weakened weave, most notably in the lower central section beneath the seated figures. Additional thread losses, abrasions, and thinning are visible throughout, especially within darker landscape areas. The borders show wear, softening of colors, and minor fraying, particularly at the corners. Small holes, pulled threads, and traces of old repairs may be observed upon close inspection. Overall patina, light fading, and uneven tension are present, as expected for an antique Aubusson tapestry. Despite these imperfections, the piece remains structurally presentable and visually striking, offering strong decorative impact and genuine historical character. The small French town of Aubusson, on the River Creuse, is famed for its tradition of weaving elegantly elaborate tapestries. They often depicted romantic pastoral, historic or architectural scenes and were particularly noted for their compositions of garlands and bouquets, becoming famous and sought after throughout Europe. In 1665, the weavers of Aubusson were granted the title of 'Royal Manufacturer, and received commissions from Louis XV, Louis XVI and Napoleon I. A 1786 inventory lists more than one hundred Aubusson carpets at the palace of Versailles and a 1789 inventory of all royal palaces describes a great many more.
