About the Item

Dora Jung is one of Finland's greatest textile artists. Throughout her life, she worked tirelessly to master materials and techniques, never compromising on her artistic vision. She developed traditional damask weaving techniques and created modern damask weaves that are works of art in their own right. She studied at the Central School of Fine Arts and Crafts, graduating in 1932, and immediately established her own textile workshop, “Dora Jung Textil,” at her home. In 1937, she won a gold medal at the Paris World's Fair, began collaborating with Tampella, who later became her artistic advisor, and started working with Artek on tablecloths and napkins for the Savoy Restaurant designed by the Aalto couple, making it a pivotal year in her career. In 1938, she held a joint exhibition with Gunnel Nyman, a designer who had been her friend and colleague since her student days. The two collaborated again in 1947 for an exhibition at Artek. Among her many awards, her achievements at the Milan Triennale are particularly noteworthy. She won the Grand Prix three times in a row, in 1951 and 1954 for works from her own workshop, and in 1957 for a product made by Tampella. In 1979, she was awarded the title of Royal Designer for Industry (HonRDI) by the Royal Society of Arts in the United Kingdom. This piece was made at her own textile workshop, Dora Jung Textil. It was given to Simone Prouve, a textile artist and daughter of Jean Prouve, by Dora Jung. Simone Prouve, before establishing herself as an artists, spent six months apprenticing under Alice Lund in Sweden in 1953. She then moved to Finland at Alice Lund's recommendation and apprenticed under Dora Jung as a weaver. This is a very rare piece. ※In good condition with no noticeable damage.
