About the Item

This is an old Japanese BORO. It was made in the late Edo period (1800s-1860s) and is an extremely valuable piece that has been carefully passed down to the present day. BORO" is a cloth that symbolizes the wisdom and aesthetics of the Japanese way of life, which has been used for many years by applying multiple layers of old cloth. In times when supplies were scarce, clothing, bedding, futons, and other items were repaired rather than thrown away, and were then recycled as cloth imbued with the memories and time of the family. Especially in cold regions such as the Tohoku region, these thick BOROs were very useful. This BORO is very thick, approximately 5 mm thick, and there are traces of cotton between the reverse side and the front side, which was reinforced by stitching. This thickness indicates that it may have been used as a futon, and it has a particularly strong presence among the existing BOROs. Measuring approximately 1700 mm x 1700 mm, the near-square format gives the impression of an abstract painting when hung on the wall. The shades of indigo dye, striped fabric, and countless repair marks overlap rhythmically, evoking strong emotions in the viewer. Scratches, tears, and joint marks are all the accumulation of time and accidental forms. They are not defects, but rather parts of the beauty of the piece. In contemporary interiors, BORO functions as a true art piece. It adds warmth and depth to an otherwise inorganic space and tells a quiet story. We recommend hanging it on a wall like an abstract painting. When shipping, we will carefully fold and pack it in a compact package.
