About the Item

A 1960s handwoven fiber-art panel by the noted Czechoslovakian artist, Věra Drnková-Žárecká. Born in 1922, Žárecká was an avant-garde Czech textile and costume designer who, in 1959, took part in a ground breaking exhibition as a member of the Group 7 of young textile artists in Eastern Europe. The 1960s marked a revolutionary turning point in the art world when fiber and woven threads of various organic sources began to challenge traditional flat wall art hangings to become monumental, three-dimensional works of fine art in their own right. This transformation was propelled primarily by the International Biennale of Tapestry in Lausanne, Switzerland, where a groundbreaking wave of young artists from throughout Eastern Europe and the United States exhibited their textile creations, including both Magdalena Abakanowicz and Sheila Hicks, who were both artistic peers of Žárecká. Signed by the artist.
