About the Item

19th century Burmantofts of Leeds ornamental floral scrollwork large scale tile. Moulded in high relief, this beautiful tile displays a quatrefoil floral design, culminating with an acanthus motif to the centre. In a rich cream glaze over a light blue base, this large scale tile is one of ten we have available dating back to circa 1880. Burmantofts Named after the Burmantofts district of Leeds, England, owners of Burmantofts Pottery, William Wilcock and John Lassey, followed the example of Royal Doulton and grew into a large company after starting with unglamorous utilitarian wares in 1859. The company expanded into decorative pottery and architectural ceramics, such as tiles like this one. The company flourished until the turn of the century when, much like many smaller companies of its time, competition from foreign businesses with cheaper prices forced the business to close in 1957.

    Wear consistent with age and use. Good structural condition. There are losses to the high relief areas with chips to the modelling and glaze. Silicon dabbed to the back. Minor nibbles chips and losses to edges. Signs of use and fitment.
