About the Item

A very large late 16th/early 17th century oak carving; one of two similar beautifully handcarved panels we are selling featuring depictions from the Last Supper. Ornate and finely crafted, the hand-carving on this panel is of excellent quality, showcasing the skill of its maker. Jesus can be seen at the centre of the piece, his twelve disciples sat at the table around him. A decorative canopy with great swags is carved above complemented by carved swags of fruits and foliage below, all framed by an egg and dart border. Completing the piece is a wax finish that accentuates the patina of the wood, giving it a warm, honey-toned colour that brings the carvings to life. It is fitted with a wire to the reverse ready for hanging on an interior wall. Further similar panel available - please enquire for details.
