About the Item

Extraordinarily rare, and perhaps unique, this Art Deco-Moderne sculpture of a kneeling, nude male figure, clearly representing the workers of the coal mining and manufacturing Saar region of Germany -- was cast in iron in 1935. The Saar was administered by the United Kingdom and France from 1920-1935, under a League of Nations mandate in the wake of World War I when the defeated Germany was forced to give up some of its land and autonomy. The Saar's lands were taken in part from Prussia and in part from Bavaria, and was administered by a governing commission. Under this arrangement, the residents of the Saar were permitted to decide their future after 15 years via a plebiscite; after lobbying and pressure from the new Hitler regime, the vote was in favor of a reunion with the rest of the German state. It's clear that this sculpture had a propaganda purpose; given that the figure is kneeling, with his hands behind his back, it is not clear whether it was intended to celebrate Saar's brief semi-independence, or the suffering it would endure under the National Socialist regime. The sculptor was probably Viktor Funk, who sculpted a very similar nude figure in the round in 1923, again to mark the Saar region's subjugation. Originally, this sculpture was probably attached to a building facade.
