Montclair Home Renovation

Family Home di Andrew Suvalsky Designs a Montclair, NJ

For the first time in a twenty-year career, Andrew Suvalsky turned his signature eye on his most personal project yet: the Montclair, New Jersey home he shares with his husband and their two young children. Originally built in 1952, the single-story house became a two-year labor of love, reimagined into a space that is at once updated, cozy, and playful: a full expression of Suvalsky's "modern meets vintage" sensibility.

The home takes its cue from the property's mid-century bones, clean lines, and easy simplicity, before departing into something far more unexpected. In the dining room, one of the home's most dramatic moments, a large-scale photograph of Steve McQueen and Jacqueline Bisset is set against lush botanical wallpaper, the intensity softened by an inventive palette of cyan, yellow, and deep green. The living room layers French blue with bold yellow and a graphic pattern, anchored by black-and-white houndstooth chairs by the fireside. A dramatically veined black-and-gold floor carries the eye from the foyer into the kitchen, while a monumental photograph of Matera, Italy, greets guests at the door.

Completed in late 2021, the home tells the family's own story: daring, warm, and entirely their own.
