About the Item

This exceptional sterling silver cuff bracelet is handcrafted by renowned Navajo silversmith Kirk Smith using the traditional sand casting technique. The design centers on a striking spiny oyster cabochon, complemented by classic Navajo motifs, including bear paw (bear step) elements and radiating silver patterns. The spiny oyster stone is set within a twisted rope bezel and accented with four silver raindrops, enhancing its rich color and presence. Flanking the central stone are hand-carved traditional Navajo designs, featuring silver rays and bear step motifs that add depth, symbolism, and texture to the piece. Dimensions • Stone: 3/8” x 1/2” • Width: 1/4” – 1/2” • Gap: 1” • Inside Measurement: 5 1/4” • Total Inner Circumference: 6 1/4” • Weight: 1 oz • Signed: Yes About Sand Casting Navajo sand casting is a traditional and labor-intensive jewelry-making technique developed between 1840 and 1860. The process involves carving a design into sandstone or a sand-and-oil mixture to form a mold, into which molten silver is poured. Each piece is individually hand-finished, resulting in unique textures and soft, organic forms. Distinct from tufa casting, sand casting is especially valued for its authenticity and the individuality of each creation. About the Artist Kirk Smith (1957–2012) Kirk Smith was a highly respected Navajo (Diné) silversmith, celebrated for his mastery of traditional techniques and exceptional craftsmanship. A member of the Kiyaa Áanii (Towering House) clan, he began working with silver at the age of seven, assisting his grandfather, John Smith, in a modest workshop using simple, time-honored tools. From 1969 to 1972, he formally studied sand casting within his family, and by 1980 he had established himself as a full-time silversmith. Early in his career, he was mentored by his brother-in-law, the renowned silversmith Harry Morgan, whose influence shaped his approach to design and artistry. Kirk specialized in traditional Navajo jewelry, often incorporating high-grade stones into his work. His pieces are widely admired for their balance, quality, and fidelity to classic Navajo aesthetics, securing his place among the most respected silversmiths of his generation. Reflecting on his journey, Kirk once shared: “My sister was married to Harry Morgan, and he really taught me how to design a piece. Before, I never paid much attention to style. That changed because of Harry. My grandfather told me, ‘When you leave something here, your name will always be here.’” Kirk Smith passed away on September 17, 2012, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, at the age of 55. His legacy endures through his work, which continues to be cherished by collectors and admirers of Native American jewelry.
