Engagement gone sour? Guy wants his ring back? Make it just a little more difficult by turning the ring into a pair of gorgeous earrings! That's what we did with this 14 karat white gold vintage-inspired engagement ring that came into our shop about twenty years ago, complete with back story and plenty of hard feelings. No matter! The road to true love usually includes a few suboptimal side trips, but it gets there eventually. As he always does with engagement rings, Eytan removed the center diamond and tossed the ring onto the Boulevard of Broken Dreams (i.e., our pre-owned engagement ring tray). This particular ring had a center setting for a weirdly proportioned cushion cut diamond, and as such, it proved impossible to sell. In these cases, Eytan frequently cuts out the center setting and replaces it with a mounting either for a stone size that's either more standard or for an actual stone we have on hand. But after he removed the center mounting, he liked the clean tapered columnar look of the shoulders and got the idea to use them for earrings! Brilliant! But after soldering on the posts and sticking them on his cooperative assistant, they agreed something was missing. Namely, a pair of absolutely gorgeous, top-notch white Akoya pearls. The finished product is extraordinary and absolutely unique. The tops each host 23 tiny diamonds pave-set on three sides -- all full-cut rounds except for one small baguette stationed in the front near the pearl. The total diamond weight for all 46 diamonds is just under a half carat. The diamonds are decent quality; Eytan rates them SI1 clarity and H color. They are, of course, all natural (earth-mined) stones. The pearls are gem quality Akoyas from our pearl dealer, Seven Seas Pearls, with offices in Los Angeles, Canada and Germany. Seven Seas only deals in saltwater pearls -- no freshwater and nothing from China. These pearls are white and round with pink overtones and exceptional luster. Butterfly backs in 14 karat white gold are included.
