About the Item

An exceptional and rare collectors' strand of 40 uniform "Trade Amber" beads from West Africa. This piece is a remarkable testament to the historical trans-Saharan trade routes, where early 20th-century phenolic resins—highly coveted polymers known in the trade as Faturan—were exchanged as high-status ornaments. Unlike common graduated strands, this necklace features 40 beads of consistent, substantial size. The material displays a sophisticated "swirl" effect, with internal smoke-like clouds that masterfully emulate antique butterscotch amber. A unique hallmark of authenticity is the presence of microscopic cellulose (paper) inclusions within the translucent resin, a distinctive trait of mid-century artisanal casting processes. The vibrant yellow hue carries deep cultural resonance across the West African region. In traditions such as those of the Yoruba in Nigeria, this palette is sacred to the goddess Oshun, representing beauty, spiritual wealth, and fertility. Presented on its 1970s traditional fiber mounting with a classic tribal bicone closure, this necklace is a significant acquisition for connoisseurs of ethnic jewelry and historical resins.
