About the Item

This exquisite three-strand cultured Akoya pearl necklace dates to the late Art Deco to early Retro era, circa 1930s–1940s—a period widely considered the pinnacle of pearl culturing craftsmanship. The necklace features luminous, gently graduated pearls measuring approximately 3.4mm to 4.4mm, each one perfectly matched for size, roundness, and luster. It is an uncommon and highly desirable 14" length. What distinguishes this piece is not only its age and elegance but its utterly pristine condition. Still on its original silk cord, the pearls are as immaculate today as they were nearly a century ago—an extraordinary rarity for a multi-strand necklace of this vintage. The strands are kept gracefully aligned by a pair of 14k white gold spacers, adding refinement and structural integrity. At the clasp, fine 14k white gold is set with a pair of petite sky-blue sapphires and a pair of shimmering white sapphires, offering a subtle nod to the streamlined elegance of the Art Deco period as it transitioned into the softer silhouettes of the Retro era. These pearls display breathtaking orient—the elusive spectral shimmer that seems to glide just beneath the surface of the nacre. This optical phenomenon is rarely seen in modern cultured Akoya pearls, which are typically harvested too soon to allow the nacre to build to the necessary thickness. These early cultured pearls, by contrast, reflect the patience and precision of master pearl farmers working at the zenith of their craft. This necklace is a rare treasure—elegant, investment-worthy, and rarely encountered.

Akoya Pearl Necklace, Diamond Clasp, 9mm Luxury Size Pearls, circa 1980s, Iconic

Akoya Pearl Necklace, Diamond Clasp, 9mm Luxury Size Pearls, circa 1980s, Iconic

Located in Northampton, MA

This is a stunning vintage pearl necklace measuring 18 inches in length and composed of 55 9mm-9.4mm round cultured Akoya pearls and finished with an 18K white gold beaded ball clasp which glitters with a multitude of small full-cut diamonds that total approximately .50 carats. The necklace was purchased in the United Kingdom but bears no hallmarks. It's very well-made and remains on its original silk, which still appears sturdy. I believe the necklace dates to the 1980s. Cultured Akoya pearls over 8mm in diameter are the most coveted of all Akoya pearls because fine ones are difficult to achieve. The longer a pearl remains inside the oyster the thicker the nacre and larger it grows but the greater the opportunity for any number of variables to come along and spoil the pearl. These large 9-9.4mm pearls are luminous and stunning: they are creamy-white with a soft pink overtone. The pearls possess a nice, sharp shine. This 18" necklace truly represents the quintessential cultured Akoya pearl necklace...
