About the Item

Lovely Georgian rivière with unusually colored foil back pink pastes on silver closed backs. Rivieres were the classic dressy necklace of the Georgian era, so called because they were thought to resemble the glittering lights of the ships at night on the riviere. The silver gilt mounts are beautifully constructed. The riviere measures approximately 16 inches in length,. The necklace has a rectangular pink paste clasp probably not the original. Paste is a simulated diamond "gemstone", invented by a French jeweler named Georg Strass, who discovered how to hand carve leaded glass into a material as hard and as reflective as diamonds, known as "pastes". His standards were exacting. Each paste was expected to be perfectly executed, which indicates each paste link is hand carved. Paste jewelry achieved great popularity from the 18th century and became the "traveling' jewelry for women when they journeyed to the country. Hugely popular, "paste" jewelry was beloved for its meticulous meticulously craftsmanship and was made with fine metals to match the quality of the "gems".
