About the Item

19th-Century Hand-Painted Porcelain Cherub Miniature Plaque – After Raphael’s Sistine Madonna An exquisite late-Victorian oval decorative plaque insert featuring a fine, hand-painted miniature portrait of a pensive cherub (or putto). The artwork is an expertly executed period adaptation modelled directly after High Renaissance master Raphael’s iconic 1512 altarpiece painting, the Sistine Madonna. This charming piece captures the cherub resting his chin thoughtfully upon his hand. Diverging playfully from the original Renaissance fresco tones, the artist has embellished this portrait with vibrant, multi-coloured rainbow wings—a highly stylised and sought-after motif popular in late-19th-century European costume jewellery and sentimental keepsakes. The miniature displays exceptional artisan craftsmanship, featuring distinct, multi-layered brushwork. Microscopic impasto technique is visible under close inspection, displaying raised, hand-painted details defining the eyes and soft golden curls. The entire surface is sealed beneath an authentic antique protective varnish topcoat, designed to preserve the delicate pigment layer beneath. Originally intended as a high-quality cameo insert for a luxury Victorian brooch, pendant, or locket frame, this beautiful piece stands alone as an excellent cabinet collectible or a prime candidate for custom fine jewellery resetting.
