About the Item

This unmounted cameo was hand carved out of shell in the last quarter of the 19th century. The face and the hairstyle are carved in Roman Revival manner, the classical beauty is depicted as a Baccante, a female follower of the god Bacchus. The goddess wears a top in Neo Renaissance taste. Her elegant coiffure is decorated with vine leaves.
