About the Item

This rather charming miniature portrait dates to the early 19th century, during the reign of George III. The oil on copper miniature is housed in an ebonised timber frame and is cased with a piece of convex glass, which appears to be original to the piece. When removed from the frame, the rear of the copper revealed some writing which is unfortunately illegible, however authenticates the piece. To the rear of the frame itself is a period piece of paper pasted to the backing which reads 'Thomas', and also what appears to be a surname, however this is also unfortunately illegible. It's very likely the miniature is of a gentleman named Thomas, and from his clothing and appearance we can ascertain he was a man of means, perhaps even someone of nobility. His clothing suggests the picture was painted in the Regency period of the early 19th century, making this miniature around 200 years old. Whilst it is hard to be completely sure of its origin, it is likely that the miniature is English with the name Thomas pasted to the rear and based off the gentleman's clothes. The original brass hanging ring with acorn detail remains in tact and is a beautiful addition to the otherwise very simple Georgian frame.
